Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

Located amidst the golden sands of the Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer Fort was built by the Bhati Rajput King Rawal Jaisal. It remained an important trade center during the medieval era before the popularity of maritime trade centers such as Bombay and Calcutta. Today, it is one of the important tourist centers in Rajasthan known for its exquisite Rajput Architecture and scenic beauty.

If one want to see the replica of the fort, which was shown in the television cartoon " Arabian nights ", then jaisalmer fort is the place to be. Caunted amongst the largest forts in the world, jaisalmer fort is the most popular landmark of jaisalmer city. Unlike other forms of Rajasthan, jaisalmer fort houses museum, shops, restaurant, residential accommodations, hotels, etc.

The fort was built in 1156, and is a proud chattel of the Bhati clan. Rawal jaiswal was the founder of jaisalmer city, and jaisalmer fort was built in his reign. It is a 250 foot tall fort, which is protected by 30 feet long walls.

The fort's massive yellow sandstone walls are a twany lion colour during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert on Trikuta Hill. It is today located along the southern edge of the city that bears it's name; it's dominant hilltop location making the sprawling towers of its fortification visible for many miles around.

In 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Jaisalmer Fort, along with 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
